Under the NYS Clean Heat program, the New York electric utilities have partnered to offer incentives to help residents, small businesses, and commercial and multifamily building owners convert to cleaner heating in the most cost-effective and energy efficient way.

Instead of using fossil-derived fuels, heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat rather than generate heat. By encouraging the installation of heat pumps, the program seeks to reduce statewide carbon emissions by helping all types of buildings become more energy efficient. As of the end of 2023, NYS Clean Heat had installed and incentivized over 61,000 clean heat projects and reduced over 4.5 million MMBtu of natural gas, which is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from more than 6.1 million miles driven by an average gasoline-powered passenger vehicle.
